Post-Op Care Instructions

Taking care of yourself after surgery is just as important as the procedure itself. By following these instructions, you’ll set yourself up for a successful healing process. And if you have any questions as you prepare, you can always give us a call.

Immediate Post-Surgery Care

After your procedure, you’ll need a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you for at least 24 hours. Rest is essential—it’s best to plan to take it easy for the rest of the day and avoid any strenuous activities. Give your body the time it needs to recover.

Managing Discomfort and Swelling

It’s normal to feel some discomfort after surgery, but we’ll provide you with tools to manage it. Use any prescribed pain medications as directed, or take over-the-counter options like ibuprofen or acetaminophen if recommended. To reduce swelling, apply an ice pack to the area for 20 minutes on, then 20 minutes off, during the first 24-48 hours.

Bleeding Control

Some light bleeding is expected after surgery, but it should be simple to manage. Bite down gently on gauze pads for the time specified, and then replace them as needed. To minimize bleeding, keep your head elevated and avoid spitting, using straws, or smoking.

Eating and Drinking

Stick to soft foods and liquids for the first few days, like yogurt, applesauce, or soup (just make sure it’s not too hot). Avoid anything spicy, crunchy, or chewy that could irritate the surgical area. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, and skip alcohol and caffeine while you heal.

Oral Hygiene

Keeping your mouth clean is important, but you’ll need to be gentle. Brush your teeth carefully, avoiding the surgical area, and rinse with warm saltwater or any prescribed mouthwash as directed. Avoid using commercial mouthwashes unless we’ve specifically recommended them.

Activity Restrictions

We recommend that you take it slow as you recover. Avoid heavy lifting, strenuous exercise, or anything that could strain your body for the time we’ve specified. Gradually ease back into your normal routine as you start to feel better.

Medications

We’ll provide you with any necessary prescriptions, such as antibiotics, pain relievers, or anti-inflammatory medications. Follow the dosage instructions carefully, and be sure to complete the full course of antibiotics if prescribed. If you have any questions about your medications, don’t hesitate to ask.

Follow-Up Care

We’ll let you know when to schedule a follow-up appointment to check on your healing progress. Keep an eye out for any unusual symptoms, like excessive bleeding, severe pain that doesn’t improve with medication, or signs of infection such as fever or swelling. If you notice anything concerning, contact us right away—we’re here to help.
